Muddy Waters famously sang: “The blues had a baby and they called it rock ‘n’ roll”. But there’s much more to that musical mix than the African-American traditions of jazz and blues.

The hillbilly tunes and rhythms carried across the Atlantic by Ulster-Scots settlers in the 1700s, have their own part to play in the story of rock and roll.
